Colonial Downs is Virginia’s only pari-mutuel horse racetrack and is located in New Kent County, which is one of the oldest and most charming counties in the Commonwealth, with an English history dating back 400 years. The track features a summer thoroughbred racing season, a fall harness racing season, and an ever growing year-round slate of special events. Three quarters of the summer thoroughbred races are held over the Secretariat Turf Course, which at 180 feet wide, is the widest grass surface of any track in North America. The 1¼ mile dirt track is the country’s second largest, next to Belmont Park in New York.
The expansive grounds include grandstand seating, corporate tents and two simulcast ampitheaters, while the 500-seat Jockey Club Dining Room, 10 luxury Sky Suites and special event ballroom complement this unique setting. Colonial Downs offers year-round simulcast wagering at its eight Off Track Betting Centers (OTB). These OTB Centers are where fans can watch and wager on live horse races year-round via satellite from around the country. They are located throughout Virginia including Richmond, Hampton Roads, Alberta, Vinton, Martinsville and Scott County.
The Virginia Derby is Colonial’s annual showcase event. This Grade II Derby is held mid July and attracts thoroughbred racing’s top three-year-old horses, along with the sport’s top jockeys and trainers as they compete at 1¼ miles on the signature turf course. Another big race at the track is the Grade II Colonial Turf Cup which includes the top older turf runners as well as three-year-olds and is typically held in mid June.
